From a column written by EJ Dionne Jr at the Washington Post: Unearned Blessings

"The rule is: Make no gratuitous enemies," he said. "The key word is 'gratuitous'."

If you stand for something, you will always make enemies. That is part of the price of being principled. What you should avoid are entirely unnecessary fights that advance no cause but create bitter feelings. I’ll always think of it as a singularly important piece of political wisdom.

The subject of unnecessary fights has been on my mind quite a bit lately. I and several people I know are exceedingly passionate about our politics and that definitely comes out on Facebook. I have been working the past several months to dial back the degree to which I engage those who clearly do not share my viewpoint. After the initial conversation is over (the one where you determine that you don't agree and can't change the other person's mind), there really is no point to continuing to engage each other.

This is not to say that I'm no longer interested in quality conversations. That is, conversations where the participants are actively and respectfully exchanging ideas and information. And I don't mind someone suggesting an alternate view or pointing out facts I may not have been aware of.

But when someone comes onto my page with the clear intention of pointing out how "wrong" I am, using a superior attitude and/or derailing techniques to make me feel inferior for disagreeing with him/her, then I will certainly not "wimp" out. I will respond and tell them exactly what I think of their opinion and their behavior. Not very zen of me, I suppose, but that's where it's at right now.
